Crayfish Color Morphs Explained

Electric Blue, Blue Ghost, Orange Ghost, White Spectre, what each morph is and how it gets its color.

What Is a Color Morph?

In the wild, Procambarus crayfish are mottled brown, camouflage for muddy riverbeds. A color morph is a naturally occurring genetic variation that changes how pigment is produced or layered in the shell. Through generations of selective breeding, those rare variations become stable lines with reliable, vivid color.

Every morph we sell is captive-bred in our own systems. Here's the full lineup.

Electric Blue (Procambarus alleni)

The icon of the hobby. Electric Blue alleni produce intense cobalt color across the entire body, the result of a genetic variation that suppresses warm pigments and lets blue dominate.

Color deepens with each molt and peaks in adulthood. A good diet and clean water keep the blue saturated for life. If you're choosing your first crayfish, this is the one everyone notices.

Blue Ghost (Procambarus clarkii)

Ghost morphs carry a semi-translucent, marbled shell over a vivid base color, no two Blue Ghosts ever share the same pattern. Patches of deep blue swirl over pale, ice-like sections that shift slightly with every molt.

If you like the idea of a crayfish that's literally one of a kind, Ghost morphs are it. Watching the pattern evolve molt after molt is half the fun.

Orange Ghost (Procambarus clarkii)

The Orange Ghost takes the same marbled, translucent patterning as the Blue Ghost and trades blue for fiery tangerine. Against dark substrate and green plants, the contrast is unbeatable.

Orange Ghosts are bold even by clarkii standards, expect a crayfish that patrols its tank like it owns the place (because as far as it's concerned, it does).

White Spectre (Procambarus alleni)

The White Spectre is the Electric Blue's ghostly sibling, an alleni morph with pigment reduced to a clean porcelain white with subtle blue undertones. In a planted tank or against dark stone, it glows.

Spectres carry the same hardy, easygoing alleni temperament, making them just as beginner-friendly as their blue cousins, with a look almost nobody else has.

Color Builds With Molts

Juveniles deepen in color with every molt; adults show the morph at full intensity.

Diet Drives Vibrancy

Varied food with natural carotenoids keeps shells saturated and glossy.

True-Breeding Lines

Our morphs are stable, captive-bred lines, what you see is what arrives.
